Why Fairtrade Coffee???

What is fair trade coffee?

Fair trade coffee is where strict guidelines are put in place to ensure that locals who work on the coffee plantations are paid a fair wage for their labour. It also ensures that crops are grown in a sustainable manner. All too often, many other plantations will take advantage of local residents who desperately need money and will pay them way below what is considered a fair wage in their country. They will also over harvest the coffee plantations to make a ‘quick profit’, not concerning themselves with the future of that particular plantation. After all, they will just leave it in ruin and move on to another. This greatly affects the locals and their ability to earn wages.

Archtop Café supports fair trade coffee and believes in only purchasing coffee that will benefit those that work so hard to grow and harvest our ‘daily fix’.

North Americans consume a huge quantity of coffee on a daily basis….. Why not use our favorite beverage to support others in this world. We have the ability to provide a good life and sustainable future for others not as fortunate as us. Think about that when you order your next morning coffee.

Today's Tea Trivia

What is Rooibos Tea?

Rooibos is a red tea from South Africa. It is an environmentally sensitive plant that only grows commercially in one small corner of the world – South Africa’s Cederberg district. The soil conditions, rainfall and sunshine of the district can’t be duplicated anywhere else on earth. In order to protect the future of rooibos, environmental controls in the area are stringent and growers take great care in ensuring that the fragile Cederberg ecosystem isn’t tampered with or altered.

Rooibos is an extremely healthy tea that is also caffeine free. Rooibos is loaded with polyphenois, iron, zinc, fluoride, calcium and magnesium. Rooibos has been enjoyed in South Africa for centuries and was first made available to Westerners by a Russian émigré named Benjamin Ginsberg.

If you haven’t tried this healthy and tasty tea, try some soon. Archtop Café carries a selection of different rooibos teas.
